Summary of the semi-finals of the ATP 250 of Auckland 2026 – ASB Classic

These semi-finals saw two quality matches, first the encounter between Jakub Mensik and Fabian Marozsan and then the one opposing Sebastian Baez and Marcos Giron.

First, let’s take a closer look at the opening match. As mentioned earlier, although Fabian Marozsan eliminated the defending champion in the first round and Caper Ruud, the number 2 seed, in the second round, he struggled in the quarterfinals against the American Eliot Spizzirri, who had come through the qualifying. As for Jakub Mensik, the tournament’s number 3 seed, he started directly in the round of 16, where he faced Hamed Medjedovic in a rollercoaster match interrupted by the rain, before securing a convincing victory against Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard.

In this semi-final, he narrowly defeated the Hungarian in three sets, 7-6 (9-7), 4-6, 6-1. After a tight first set, he looked set to win the match in two sets when his opponent tightened his game and ultimately rallied to take it 6-4. In the third set, Jakub Mensik displayed greater focus, especially from the third game onward. This is a promising sign heading into the Australian Open, but he will need to find the strength to play with more consistency if he wants to go far in this first Grand Slam of the season. For now, he is still benefiting greatly from playing against players less consistent than those in the top 10.

The second semi-final pitted Sebastian Baez, the man in form at the moment since the start of this 2026 season, against Marcos Giron who seems to be finding his rhythm again with Constant Lestienne in his box.

Sebastian Baez had a fantastic United Cup, beating Taylor Fritz, among others, and it seems that his preseason paid off handsomely because he’s playing exceptionally well. He started the tournament somewhat shakyly with a hard-fought victory against the American Emilio Nava. He was in a difficult position until his opponent picked up a minor injury and finished the match hampered. Then he began to find his rhythm and gain momentum throughout the tournament, eliminating the number 1 seed, world number 8, Ben Shelton, in the previous round, and securing another win against a Top 10 player this year.

Facing him was Marcos Giron, who seems to be slowly but surely regaining his form with Constant Lestienne in his box. He had a good tournament from the start, notably eliminating his compatriot Alex Michelsen, the 6th seed. Today, however, he couldn’t find the necessary weapons in his game to counter his opponent and lost 6-1, 6-4, quite logically.

This promises a great final between the in-form player and the tournament’s number 3 seed. We have a preference for the Argentinian, who could claim his eighth title so early this year.
